R Ratings

The R ratings on floor tiles are an important measure of slip resistance, which directly relates to the effectiveness of non-slip tiles. These ratings, ranging from R9 to R13, indicate the level of grip a tile provides underfoot, especially in wet or slippery conditions. R9 tiles have a lower slip resistance, suitable for most areas, while R10 to R12 are ideal for spaces like bathrooms and kitchens where moisture is common. We tend to recommend that any tiles used in an outdoor setting are at least R11 and above.

The R ratings are obtained from the manufacturer using method DIN51130.  This is a shod foot test only.  Barefoot ratings can be obtained upon request for areas like swimming pools and wetrooms.

Please note a tiles surface must be kept in it’s original state, modern household cleaners and general dirt can contaminate the surface and build layers that reduce the effectiveness of their surface.

R Ratings Explained

Below is a brief description of R ratings and realistically the areas which they should be used. This is all subject to personal opinion, which is why we suggest always ordering a free sample of any tile to check the finish and make sure you are happy with it and where it is going to be laid.

R9 Anti Slip Rating

The R9 slip rating on a floor tile indicates a lower level of slip resistance, and is typically suitable for most indoor areas in the home. While they can offer some grip, they may not be ideal for areas prone to spills or water, like kitchens or bathrooms without some extra stability such as a bath mat. If safety against slipping is a primary concern in these higher risk environments, it’s generally better to opt for tiles with a higher R rating for improved traction.

R10 Anti Slip Rating

The R10 slip rating indicates moderate slip resistance, making these tiles suitable for light to moderate foot traffic in areas that may occasionally experience moisture. This rating is commonly used in spaces like kitchens, bathrooms, and hallways, where spills can occur but are not constant. R10 tiles provide a balance between safety and aesthetic appeal, offering a reliable grip without compromising on style. While they offer better traction than R9 tiles, it’s still important to maintain proper cleaning and care to ensure their effectiveness in preventing slips.

R11 Anti Slip Rating

The R11 slip rating offers a higher level of slip resistance, making these tiles suitable for areas with regular exposure to moisture, such as bathrooms, kitchens, and external spaces. R11-rated tiles provide excellent grip, reducing the risk of slips and falls, even when the surface is wet. They are ideal for environments with moderate to heavy foot traffic, offering both safety and durability. Choosing R11 tiles is a smart decision for anyone prioritizing safety in high-traffic or wet areas.

R12 Anti Slip Rating

The R12 slip rating indicates a high level of slip resistance, making these tiles ideal for environments that are frequently wet or where safety is a top priority. Commonly used in commercial kitchens, public restrooms, and outdoor areas, R12-rated tiles provide excellent traction underfoot, significantly reducing the risk of slips and falls. They are well-suited for heavy foot traffic and can withstand the demands of both residential and industrial settings. Choosing R12 tiles ensures a safer environment while still offering a variety of design options to fit your aesthetic needs.
